Wells signs off with victory in Shanghai finale
Mon 20, Oct, 2014

Hong Kong based Briton Dan Wells took his fifth consecutive podium with a victory in the final round of the 2014 Formula Masters China Series at the Shanghai International Circuit last weekend (October 17-19).

Testing for the event had gone very well, with Dan topping both the morning and afternoon sessions on the Thursday. Qualifying took place the following day and this saw Dan line up with a 2nd and 3rd place for races 1 and 3 of the weekend.

In race 1, Dan made a good start and was immediately putting pressure on his team mate on the first lap. With the long back straight of the Shanghai circuit offering lots of slipstreaming opportunities, Dan was engaged in a three car battle for a spot on the podium, eventually pushing through to finish 3rd.

Race 2 saw Dan start from a more challenging 5th place, but a storming start where Dan overtook Matt Solomon into turn 1 and 2, followed by a dive into turn 3 meant Dan moved up to 3rd place by the end of the first sector of the opening lap. The 7 lap race was interrupted by a safety car which meant only two racing laps were run and Dan took another podium.

The final race of the weekend would see Wells line up 3rd on the grid. With his Shanghai based fans cheering him on with their British flags, Dan once again made a stellar start and he overtook his team mate James Munro in a daring move around the outside of turns 1 and 2. The safety car was then deployed for an incident with backmarkers on the opening lap, and racing resumed on lap 4. Wells hunted down race leader Jake Parsons, and on lap 6 Dan lined him up down the back straight and dived down the inside to take the race lead. Wells led the final 5 laps to take a victory in the last round of the season.

Wells commented, “I’d like to thank KCMG for their part in ensuring my season finished better than it started. To finish with 3/3 podiums including a win in the final race is great for those behind the scenes who make it all possible. I’ve learnt a lot this year which I hope to take forwards with me in the future. I now return to Hong Kong to continue my sponsorship raising efforts for my debut in the Macau F3 Grand Prix in November.”
