SV Racing’s Barnsley-based young gun, James Dorlin, consolidated his Junior Saloon Car Championship (JSCC) lead with a third consecutive race win and a hard-fought fifth place on the scenic Anglesey Circuit (26-27 April).
Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2014 JSCC season were held on Anglesey’s 2.1mile International GP layout and Dorlin continued to light up the timing screens, topping the leaderboard in free practice and sealing pole position for the first of two races at the Welsh venue by more than eight tenths of a second.
Dorlin led Round 3 from lights-to-flag and kept his cool while under unrelenting pressure from Ben Mills, recording the fastest lap (1m53.907s) to stretch out an advantage of 3.376s at the finish and continue an unbroken run of three race wins in 2014.
A driveshaft issue prevented 15-year old Dorlin from taking pole for Round 4 and the SVR contender was muscled out of fourth position and to the rear of the field on the typically frantic opening lap.
However, a remarkable recovery saw the determined Barnsley youngster surge from 14th to fifth place during the nine-lap contest, a fraught tussle with JSCC newcomer, Alex Day, a particular highlight.
“I think the test boosted my confidence on the Anglesey track and I was really up for the weekend and consolidating my points lead by maintaining my winning streak,” said Dorlin. “Leading race one from start to finish was very satisfying and, while it was the more laid back race of the weekend, it definitely wasn’t easy. I had Ben Mills following close behind me the entire time, so there was added pressure not to make a mistake. I had hoped for more from the second race and I think I was capable of winning it, but incidents will happen in motorsport and I still got a decent amount of points for fifth place.
“I’m already looking forward to the next round at Oulton Park, as I raced there last year and that will give me an advantage over some of the field. I’m going to do some testing to refresh my memory and I’m feeling fairly confident. Everybody is picking up pace, but I am too so I’ll just try to stay out of trouble and keep my head down to make sure I do okay.”
