Cut tire ends Brabham's race in first corner
Sun 03, Aug, 2014

Matt Brabham's horror run continued in race two of the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires double header at the undulating Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

After crashing heavily in Friday's practice session, gearbox problems race one, Matt was hoping to turn his third place starting position into a podium result in Sunday's race two.

A really good start had the third generation driver in second heading for the first turn, however a car behind moved out of Matt's slipstream and just touched his left rear tire cutting the sidewall and deflating the tire. Arriving at turn one with only three tires with air inside made it impossible for Matt to stop and he spun i nto Luis Razia taking himself out of the race. To add salt into the wounds Matt was apparently awarded a penalty for causing an accident!

"I got a really good start, and I was coming down the straight (when the incident happened); it felt like the wind at first. The car was going sideways down the straight and it was moving all over the place, then when I got into Turn 1, as soon as I hit the brakes, the whole rear end of the car just bottomed out. It felt like I just had no grip at the rear - I just spun; I'm sorry for (collecting Luiz) Razia. My tire was gone before I got to the corner, and I couldn't stop the car - everything was locking up. I'm not sure what happened behind me at the start... I think we were all pretty closely bunched there. I just caught a little bit of a hit from behind. It's just disappointing we weren't able to go out and show what the United Fiber & Data/MAZDASPEED team was capable of."

Next race for the Andretti Autosport #83 is at the Milwaukee mile oval on Aug 17th.
