Matt Brabham finished a heartbreaking second in round twelve of the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires Championship at one of the oldest race tracks in the world, the historic Milwaukee mile.
After qualifying third he quickly moved up to second in the early laps and started to run down his Andretti Autosport teammate Zach Veech, finally making the pass stick on lap 40. Brabham who also won the Pro Mazda race here last year, proceeded to draw away in the lead until with 8 laps to go Luis Razia spun into the wall deploying the pace car.
Instead of cruising to a dominate victory with an eight second lead, the race became a 4 lap shootout. Unfortunatel y Matt's restart was slightly miss timed and Veech got a run and managed to regain the lead, which he held to the finish. It was a typically unpredictable oval race where you are never certain of winning until you cross the finish line, sometimes it works for you and as Brabham experienced it can also go against you.
"Just disappointed really, I wanted to win the race. I am not in a position to win the championship, so I am just out there to win". A dejected Matt said. "I had an eight second lead and things were looking very good. With only a few laps to go the yellow came out and I knew I still had a strong car. It was just a matter of getting off the restart. Which I just didn't do good enough. I am happy we were at the front and ran a good race, but I am very disappointed for myself and the United Fiber & Data/ Mazdaspeed team we didn't win".
Brabham's races again in the last two races of the year at the Sonoma road course in California next week-end Aug 23/24.
